A rare and beautifully engraved 18th-century plan of ancient Athens and its environs, created in 1785 by Jean Denis Barbie du Bocage, one of the foremost classical geographers of the Enlightenment. Engraved by Thomas Cook and published in London by G.G. & J. Robinson, this map accompanied the celebrated work “Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece”, a fictional yet scholarly exploration of Greek civilization that captivated Europe’s intellectual elite.
The map presents Athens, Piraeus, and the surrounding countryside, including such landmarks as the Academy of Plato, the Long Walls connecting the city to its port, and the hills and rivers that shaped ancient Attic life. Its clean engraving and restrained style reflect the precision of Enlightenment cartography, balancing scientific detail with classical aesthetic clarity.
Issued in 1793 as part of the second edition of the atlas, Plan of the Environs of Athens is both a historical document and a philosophical artifact, a cartographic bridge between antiquity and modernity, between myth and rationalism.
A perfect addition for collectors of classical antiquity, Enlightenment-era maps, or historical Athens cartography.
