A magnificent hand-colored copperplate map of Brussels, engraved and published in Augsburg circa 1735 by Matthaeus Seutter, one of the most celebrated cartographers of the German Baroque.
Titled Bruxellae Belgii Cathol Ornamentum et Ducatus Brabantiae, this map depicts Brussels as the flourishing capital of Brabant, enclosed by its elaborate star-shaped fortifications and bastions.
The plan divides the city into color-coded districts, meticulously detailing its streets, churches, gardens, and defenses. Surrounding fields, rivers, and outworks are rendered with remarkable accuracy, reflecting Seutter’s mastery in both artistry and geographic precision.
At the lower margin lies a panoramic view of Brussels, showcasing its grand skyline capturing the city’s proud silhouette beneath a vast open sky.
A striking fusion of color, precision, and grandeur, Seutter’s Bruxellae remains one of the finest urban maps of 18th-century Brussels, a window into the city’s golden age before the sweeping transformations of the modern era.
Printed on premium archival paper and carefully color-restored, this edition preserves every intricate line and tone of the original copper engraving.
